Frist Part of Pea Harvest

Today we picked the first lot of peas, most of which we freeze to use throughout the coming year.

Firstly we pod them.

Then blanch for 4 minutes.

Refresh under running cold water also for 4 minutes, a wooden spoon under the bowl helps to direct the water out at only one place but keep bowl close to sink side to stop them escaping !

Drain in a colander.

Put in bags, I find a Jam Funnel is a great help with this.
Ready to freeze.

  1. Yummy :D
Do you keep the pods? I made massive batches of pea pod soup when I have peapods around, don't think I will be able to this year as only one of my plants grew :(

    1. Pea pod soup is a new one on me, my dad used to make Pea pod wine, which like most of his wines was like rocket fuel !

  2. Wow, that's a great haul! We've never had much luck with peas, unfortunately. Which is too bad, because I love them when they're fresh picked. :)

  3. Wow! That was lot of peas! Nice to see another blogger that grow veggies like me :)
I grow ones to dry. One kind is grey peas, they are tiny and looks like brown dotted birds eggs. It's a local very old sort that the vikings cultured.
Otherwise I grow sweat peas to eat fresh.

    1. I`ve had an allotment for 21 years now, ever since we got married but the time I spend there goes up and down, this could be a good year hopefully. I tried to dry some one year but they went mouldy in our “summer” weather.

    2. The best way that I dried my peas was on a large simple tray, no owen heat or paper underneath.
